Word & page counts
How many pages is 500 words?
At a standard double-spaced format (Times New Roman or Arial, 12pt, 1-inch margins), 500 words comes out to roughly one page. Single-spaced, 500 words is about half a page.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
Double-spaced, 1,000 words is about 2 pages. Single-spaced, it's roughly 1 page โ the exact count shifts a little depending on font and margin settings.
How many words is a 5-minute speech?
At an average speaking pace of 130-150 words per minute, a 5-minute speech runs about 650-750 words. Use the Reading speed control in the tool to set your own pace and check a script's length instantly.
How many words is a typical blog post?
Most SEO-focused blog posts run 1,000-2,000 words, though short-form posts (500-800 words) and long-form guides (2,500+ words) are both common depending on the topic and goal.
What's a good word count for a college essay?
Most college application essays (like the Common App) have a hard cap around 650 words. Aim to use most of that limit โ a well-developed essay in the 550-650 word range typically reads better than a very short one.
Character limits & platforms
Why does my text look fine here but get cut off on Twitter/X?
X (Twitter) counts some characters (like certain emoji or non-Latin scripts) differently than a simple character count. Our character counter uses a plain per-character count, so for X specifically, treat the limit as a close estimate and double check on the platform before publishing anything time-sensitive.
Do you support platforms not listed in the character counter?
We cover 40+ common platforms, but if yours isn't listed, use the "custom limit" field on the Character Counter tab โ type in any number and the tool will tell you exactly how many characters you have left.
What's the difference between "characters" and "characters without spaces"?
"Characters" counts every character including spaces and punctuation. "Characters without spaces" strips out spaces (but keeps punctuation), which is closer to how some platforms and style guides define length.
Grammar & spelling check
Is the grammar checker as accurate as Grammarly or Word?
No โ it's a lightweight, rule-based checker built to catch common issues fast: a typo dictionary, repeated words, long sentences, basic punctuation spacing, and a passive-voice heuristic. It's a good quick pass, not a replacement for a full grammar engine on important documents.
Can I turn off the grammar underlines while I type?
Yes โ use the Grammar check icon in the left-hand rail to toggle live underlining on or off at any time. Turning it off doesn't clear anything you've written.
Does the grammar checker send my writing anywhere?
No. All checking happens locally in your browser with JavaScript โ nothing you type is uploaded to a server.
Using the tool
Is Toolioh free to use?
Yes, the full Word Counter, Case Converter, Character Counter and Grammar Check tools are free with no account or signup required.
Can I import a Word document or PDF?
Yes โ click Import in the toolbar and choose a .txt, .docx or .pdf file. The text is extracted directly in your browser and dropped into the editor.
What happens to my text if I close the tab?
If Autosave is on, your text is kept in your browser's local storage so it's there when you come back. If Autosave is off, closing the tab clears the text completely, since nothing is stored on a server.
